Wisconsin Apprenticeship Program Celebrates 100 Years

From June 12 – 14, 2011, the Wisconsin Apprenticeship Advisory Council and the Department of Workforce Development, Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards will be hosting a 100th Anniversary of Apprenticeship Conference in Madison, Wisconsin, recognizing Wisconsin’s Registered Apprenticeship programs, formed by the nation’s first modern apprenticeship law. The law has been a model for the nation since 1911.

The conference focus will be to celebrate Wisconsin’s past leadership and embrace the future. “We are expecting 500 people from the apprenticeship trades, employers, government and educational system to attend the conference,” said Karen Morgan, Director of the Wisconsin Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards.

“The state of Wisconsin first set up a fire sprinkler fitter apprenticeship program in the 1950s,” said Chris Schoenbeck, Business Manager, Sprinkler Fitters UA Local 183.

“Prior to the establishment of the apprenticeship program, we had helpers until they learned the program, in which they then became Journeymen,” said Schoenbeck.
