NBC Madison Features Watertown Fire Department’s Fire Sprinkler Demonstration

On July 11, 2013, the Watertown Fire Department conducted a live side-by-side fire and sprinkler burn demonstration at the city’s 14th annual Lights ‘N’ Sirens Community Safety Fair. The event was well received and landed a significant spot on the 10PM newscast of the Madison NBC station.

See the video and article on NBC Madison’s website.

The National Fire Sprinkler Association – Wisconsin Chapter‘s Bob Kleinheinz narrated the demonstration and provided assistance at the event.

After the demonstration, Kleinheinz noted the difference between the living conditions and survivability of the sprinklered room versus the room where flashover occurred and ignited everything in flames. “Fire sprinklers are in every national model residential structure code…but it’s not in the code yet here in the state of Wisconsin,” adds Kleinheinz.

One observer noted, “It’s pretty amazing how fast [the fire] took off. I don’t want [the fire] in our house. The fire sprinkler system seems like a good idea to keep your family safe.”

The opportunity to build and conduct the demonstration for the community event was made possible with a $1,000 award from the national nonprofit Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC). The Watertown Fire Department is one of 25 fire departments nationwide to have received the award from HFSC, which is through a grant that HFSC received from the United States Fire Administration.
